10 Great Things That Happened in 2017

Sunday, December 31, 2017

After what felt like the longest 365 days EVER, we’re nearly at the end – so congrats on surviving the hectic year that was 2017! A new president took office (😣), Mercury was in Retrograde for what seemed like foreva and GBBO finally came back into our lives. Before you pop the Prosecco and slip into that teeny tiny dress tonight (‘cos baby you’re a firework), here’s a reminiscent rundown of all our fave moments. 2K17, these are your best bits, in no particular order…

1. Welcome to the world, Sir and Rumi Carter πŸ‘ΆπŸ‘Ά

Now, Queen Bey is no stranger to Internet-breaking news (we still haven’t recovered from Lemonade/her perfect pixie cut/the Love On Top performance at the 2012 VMAs). But, we couldn’t quite believe our eyes in February when she revealed she wasn’t just expecting un bebe – oh no – but the whole of Destiny’s Child. Then THAT photo in July marking Sir and Rumi Carter’s one month birthday? Could. Not. Cope. Bravo Bey, bravo.

2. The Fenty Takeover 🎞 πŸ’„πŸ‘šπŸŽΆ

September 8th 2017 was the day Rihanna let loose her incredibly glowy collection of make-up *choir sings* and this was just the start. Consisting of FORTY shades of foundation, glitterbomb highlighters, cover-all concealers and of course a lip glawwsss, there’s no stopping the bad gal this year. Oh, and let’s not forget Puma x Fenty, rap features (Loyalty/LemonπŸ‘Œ), film cameos and magazine covers. Shine bright, Rih.

3. Women coming togetherΒ  πŸ‘

Donald Trump was inaugurated into presidency this January but we certainly didn’t just let it go without a fight. Women’s Marches took place in cities all over the world (nearly 100,000 protesters in London) to express opposition, loud and clear. What followed was a global community of women coming together to create safe spaces, which ultimately lead to the reveal of Hollywood’s casting couches, Gina Martin’s fight against ‘upskirting’ and the #MeToo movement originally created by social activist Tarana Burke on MySpace. Who runs the world? Girls.

4. The Body Positivity movement 😍

Instagram: @sarashakeel

Plus-size blogger Stephanie Yeboah tells Stylist that ‘Body Positivity’ as a concept originated with the ‘fat acceptance movement of the Sixties, which aimed to combat anti-fat discrimination and to celebrate and inspire the validity and acceptance of fat bodies.’ Fast forward to 2017, and it’s become a fantastic force of encouragement and acceptance, regardless of body type or gender. Social media artist Sara Shakeel grabbed evvvveryone’s attention with her absolutely stunning images turning stretch marks into glittery works of art. Haitian blogger Mama Cāx shows us the beauty of being a survivor, and activist Harnaam Kaur, who was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and as a result has dealt with facial hair, tells The Guardian ‘if you’ve got it, rock it.’ We couldn’t agree more. ✊

5. RompHim 😏

Did you even have a summer if you didn’t see this ingenious invention floating about on social media? Created as a Kickstarter campaign and designed ‘to be your favourite summer outfit’, sales went through the roof. There’s actually method for ahem, visiting the bathroom – a zipper fly. No more getting fully undressed in a festival Portaloo – we’ll take three, please.

6. Unicorn food πŸ¦„

Food stylist Adeline Waugh made ALL of our multi-coloured dreams come true this year with the amazing creation of unicorn-hued food. Yes, you read that correctly. Taking the most banal of bowls from bland to B-A-M, she uses natural pigments such as beetroot to make colourful creations we just can’t get enough of. Obvs this took social media by storm, and then came the Frappucinos, cheesecakes, cocktails and even pizza

7. #BBCDad πŸ‘¨πŸ“Ί+ πŸ‘§πŸ‘Ά + πŸƒ+ πŸ‘‹ = πŸ˜‚

Twitter: @Robert_E_Kelly

We’ll set the scene for you – there’s a very serious interview on Sky News. Professor of Political Science Robert Kelly is present, sitting in his home office. Suddenly, the door swings open and all Hell breaks loose – his adorable daughter Marion marches in and takes her dad’s side on live television. It doesn’t end there. Her baby brother James rolls in on a walker, smooth as anything. Realising her two baby angels were missing, wife Jung-a Kim runs in to the rescue and retrieves both children in one swift swoop. Mr Kelly remains composed throughout. Absolute. Gold.

8. Ariande Grande πŸ’–s Manchester

Instagram: @ilovemanchester

After the horrific bombings at Manchester Arena on May 22, the world stood united against terrorism. Instead of letting fear take over, mega pop star Ariana Grande returned on Sunday to headline a benefit show for 50,000 fans. Featuring Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, there was a powerful performance from the Parrs Wood High School choir, who duetted with Grande for My Everything. Pharrell Williams summed up the mood of the concert by saying ‘I don’t see, hear or smell any fear here this evening. All I feel is love and positivity.’ ❀️

9. #AustraliaSaysYes 🌈

Instagram: @event_entertainers

Australia voted ‘I do’ to same-sex marriage πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ Banned since 2004, a historic postal survey of 61.6% voted to approve a change in the law, and celebrations all across the world were held in the name of equality. Even though we’ve still got a long way to go for the LGBTQ community, this joyous bit of news was a step forward for love.

10. A Royal wedding πŸ’

Instagram: @kensingtonpalace

The news broke on December 15th that His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle were engaged, and we could hardly contain our excitement, especially after such a looong 2017. With their fingers interlocked, gazing into each others eyes, it’s quite possible we ALL fell in love with them as a couple. The wedding has been announced for the 19th of May, 2018 – anyone else going hat shopping? πŸ‘’

So that’s it from us folks, have a Happy New Year from everyone here at Miss S HQ. 2017 – we out. *mic drop*
